It's that time of year for me again. Our school year is quickly coming to a close and I'm looking into what needs to be done to prepare for next year. We've been using the same curriculum for 2 years now. I REALLY like how it incorporates Christ into every. Single. Aspect. Only one problem though...it's boring. I literally have to force myself to teach math every day. And the past couple months I've been having a problem with Lilly that I have never had before. She doesn't want to do school work. When the teacher and the student are frustrated, that doesn't make for a happy home school experience. All of that to say, we're looking into a new curriculum for next year. I think I've pretty much decided on one but I still need to get John's okay on it. A lot of Christian homeschooler's use Sonlight. And while I really enjoy their emphasis on books, I question some of the material they use, especially in the later years. Plus, it's REALLY expensive because of all those books. I've also known some people who've used Rod & Staff. I like their more conservative approach and they certainly incorporate Christ into it all but from what I hear, it's boring too. Very textbook driven. Not quite what I'm looking for either. Although, they do have some great story books for children. So, after looking, I really like Christian Light. They use lots of godly reading material, workbooks, they offer a number of electives in the high school years, and seem to keep the childrens attention. They also have a lot of quality story books. So, while this other curriculum I've been using has helped both Lilly and Luke learn to read, I think it's time to part ways. Which, is okay because it's intended for early education anyway. Any one else out there home schooling? Do you have any curriculum suggestions? What do you do when your children don't want to do their school work?

I have been enjoying reading your blog and just want to tell you that the "Avacado Pie" was a big hit at my house. My children and husband had a great time guessing the mystery ingredient.:)
I just starting using "My Father's World" this year and I love it. It uses a more literature based approach, but is less expensive since you are able to get many of the books at your local library. It was written by a homeschooling mom and is designed for teaching multiple ages. I think the web site is www.mfwbooks.com.

I also use Sonlight and love it! The kids LOVE it too, which is so wonderful! I do understand how some of their books you may wonder about, but they have good reasons for it, which you can read about on their site...basicly it is so that you can have a controlled environment where you all discuss other beliefs and what you believe so that they are prepared to defend their faith.
The great part too, is that if you still don't want them to read it, you can just skip it! =) Perfect!
It is a more expensive choice, but you do get to keep all those quality books to read over and over!
If you want they also have a forum which you can join where others are reselling their used books and stuff, so you can buy it cheaper! You should look into it!

well, I don't know a lot about homeschooling, but I do have an education degree. I have taught in a few different schools and certainly have opinions about curriculum.
When I worked at Flint Hills Christian School they used a combo of different publishers - but the one thing I do remember is that they used ABECA Math and I really really liked it! It was more advanced than public school math, and every test & practice sheet (I think) had review questions from previous lessons & units. For example just because you have finished a unit on fractions or measurement doesn't mean that they are not a part of the multiplication homework. Also there are always 2 word problems on every test. You may have looked at this but it will always stick out in my mind as one of the best Math curriculum I have seen.
