Teaching Preschoolers

This will be my third year teaching preschool. One thing I have learned over the past couple years is that each of my children are very different people. Lilly is sweet and motherly, Luke is the strong silent type, Brad is my little go-getter, and Kate wants to be right in the middle of everything. Which such different personalities it is no surprise that each of my children learn differently too. I learned this the hard way when Luke started school. I just naturally assumed I would do the same things I did with Lilly. Only one problem. It didn't work! I couldn't keep his attention. He was bored and as a result never looked forward to school. So, we switched curriculums, got him some workbooks that had more hands on things and, presto! He was coming to me asking to do school!

With all that being said, there are a few basic tips to keep in mind when teaching preschoolers:

1. Activities - Who doesn't love a good craft project? Or a trip outside? Or a scavenger hunt? Children at the preschool age become distracted and bored pretty quickly. Chances are, drilling your preschooler with flashcards isn't going to go very well. They need change and stimulation.

2. Read, read, read - We read all throughout the day at our home. But during our preschool time I try to read at least 1 storybook everyday that goes along with that days lesson. They are learning an you are spending quality time together! Win/Win!

3. Talk to your child - I love sitting down and talking to my children. I am constantly amazed at how much they understand (and how much they misunderstand) about the world around them. They truly are like little sponges. Have some good discussion questions planned for at least a couple times a week.

4. Focus on them - Young children love it when you spend time with them! Instead of giving your child something to do and then leaving to do something else, allow a little time each day ( I have half an hour set aside) to completely focus on your preschooler(s). They'll love it!

This year I am using "Learning your letters, Learn to serve" written by Laura over at Heavenly Homemakers. I just received it yesterday and it looks so fun. I can't wait to get started. It includes thorough lesson plans, games, crafts, recipes, memory verses, Bible story suggestions, vocabulary stimulation and discussion, play, books to read, and so much more...all while encouraging service to God!!

And, no....she's not paying me to say this!

This kit could be great to have, not only for homeschoolers, but for any parent of a preschooler. If you are at all interested in teaching your preschooler this year I would recommend it!
